The sudden death took place in Derry of Brian Duffy, formerly of Letterkenny, the father of the Republic of Ireland and Brighton football star Shane Duffy.
His unexpected death has caused a feeling of deep shock and sadness.
A native of Ard O’Donnell in Letterkenny, he has lived in Derry for many years.
He was only 53 years old.
A very popular individual who was widely known, especially in soccer circles, and was a proud man from Donegal and Irish.
Brian was a great defender of Shane and was a regular at Republic of Ireland matches.
After her father’s death, Shane wrote on her Instagram account last night: “Not only were you my dad, we are my hero, my idol. I will miss calling you after the game and you will tell me how much shit Dad was. I love and miss you that you take care of all of us now every time I wear that green shirt for our country, I will be thinking of you because I know how proud you are that I am playing for Ireland. I love you and I miss you “.
Among those paying tribute to Brian is the Republic of Ireland Supporters Club: Derry Branch.
A club spokesman said Brian “couldn’t do enough for the club” and described him as a “great friend” and a “great human being.”
Brian’s untimely death comes just a few months after the death of his own mother Martha.
He is survived by his wife Siobháin (originally from Raphoe), his sons Shane and Tony, his daughter Nicole, the sisters Jackie and Michelle, brother Mark and a large number of family and many friends with whom he extends the deepest sympathy.
Funeral arrangements will follow in compliance with Covid-19 restrictions.
