Shebeen with draft beer and draft stout is mugged by gardaí

Gardaí has ​​raided and closed a fully equipped sheeben in Westport, Co Mayo.

Officers raided the premises and found a bar with taps for stout and beer and a refrigeration unit under the counter. The barrels were kept outside in a deep freeze unit.

Gardaí raided the facilities following a notice and on the basis of a search warrant.

When they arrived at the premises at 8.15pm on Sunday, they located several people “found” consuming alcohol illegally.

They informed clients that they were violating current Covid-19 regulations in relation to indoor meetings.

All indoor gatherings are prohibited under current Level 5 restrictions.

Gardaí seized a sum of cash and documents along with a “significant amount” of alcohol in cans, spirits, wine and kegs, glasses and beer taps.

A full investigation into this matter is now underway and files will be prepared for the Director of the Public Ministry.

In a statement, An Garda Síochána said there were possible criminal offenses by the operator.

“A Garda Síochána wants to remind each person of their social and personal responsibility not to frequent venues or participate in activities that may contribute to the growing spread of the Covid-19 virus,” he said.

“The Covid-19 pandemic continues to be a public health crisis and a real threat to everyone, particularly the most vulnerable in our society, the virus is still spreading, it continues to cause serious illness and death.

“An Garda Síochána continues to call on all citizens to comply with the Public Health Guidelines and Regulations in order to continue saving lives.”
