Shane Lowry misses cut at Irish Open

Shane Lowry will miss the action of the weekend at the Dubai Duty Free Irish Open as a 72 in the second round was not enough for Offaly’s man to make the cut.

The 2009 champion was two more today and seven overall, two shots off the projected cutoff mark.

Lowry improved on yesterday’s disastrous 75 with a round that featured three bogeys and a single birdie, but a three-putt from four feet at 10 proved costly and he was only able to equal the final four holes as he looked to close the gap.

Englishman Aaron Rai is now the outright leader in Galgorm in Ballymena despite only shooting a level par 70.

LEADERSHIP CHART

South Africa’s Dean Burmester 71s saw him slip back to second, where he is joined in four under Englishman Robert Rock and Swede Joakim Lagregren. Lagergren’s 66 was the lowest round of the day.

A 90-minute delay due to morning frost meant 27 players were unable to finish their second rounds on Friday, with fellow Englishmen Rai Toby Tree and Jordan Smith and Australia’s Maverick Antcliff in the best position of those with holes remaining to snatch the half the advantage. Antcliff was three under par in both his round and the week with eight holes to play.

Tree and Smith were three under for the week through 14 and 15 holes respectively, with another Englishman at Robert Rock in the clubhouse at four under along with South Africa’s Dean Burmester and Sweden’s Joakim Lagergren.

There should be five local players involved in the last two rounds.

Colm Moriarty’s 69 led him to four more, while amateur Mark Power birdied three of his last five holes for a 71 that propelled him to the top 60 and tied.

James Sugrue (level par through 16 holes), Damien McGrane (+2 to 13) and Jonathan Caldwell (+2 to 10) must finish their rounds in the morning due to poor light ending the game, after the delay at the start of today due to frost on the course.

2007 winner Padraig Harrington had six more after an unfortunate bogey on his final hole, while Paul Dunne (+9), Gavin Moynihan (+11), fan Tom McKibbin (+11) and Cormac Sharvin (+ 17) also failed.
