Downtown Douglas Village was flooded tonight after a burst water pipe sent massive amounts of water through the streets.
The center of the village is impassable with detours in place and the traffic disruption is expected to continue Tuesday morning.
The main is believed to have exploded around 9:30 pm tonight, rapidly flooding the center of town. Such was the force of the water that broke through the road surface.
The Cork City Fire Brigade responded immediately, with the brigade’s warning; “We have units around the village of Douglas dealing with a burst water pipe, be careful in the area.”
AA Roadwatch also issued a warning, saying: “There is excess surface water on several routes around Douglas due to broken water lines. Be especially careful if traveling here.”
Irish Water repair crews are currently responding and are expected to remain on site overnight to shut off the water to the affected network and begin repairs.
Traffic through Douglas Village and surrounding routes is expected to be very busy tomorrow morning with detours in place.
We will have updates early tomorrow morning on when Irish Water expects to complete the repairs.
The Douglas network outbreak was one of five reported yesterday in the city and county of Cork with Irish Water issuing alerts for several areas including Bandon, Grenagh, Knockacorbally and Banteer.
