A second confirmed case of Covid-19 was detected in a Cork high school just 24 hours after the first case was reported.

On Tuesday afternoon, the parents of Coláiste Choilm students in Ballincollig were informed that a confirmed case of coronavirus at school was reported to the Department of Public Health at HSE Sur.

On Wednesday afternoon, parents were informed of a second confirmed case of Covid-19 at the school.

The Department of Public Health said the two Covid-19 cases are not linked and that the transmission did not occur at school.

“The two people acquired Covid-19 outside of school from two different and separate sources,” said Dr. Mary O’Mahony, a public health consultant, in a new email to parents Wednesday afternoon.

He added that no child has been identified as a close contact for this newly confirmed case, similar to the first case.

Meanwhile, another confirmed case of Covid-19 has been detected at the nearby Gaelscoil Uí Riordáin National School.

In this case, neither child has been identified as a close contact.

“If your child has not been identified as a close contact at this time, your child does not need a Covid-19 test, they can continue to attend school and no further action is required at this time,” explained Dr. O ‘ Mahony.

“If your child exhibits any symptoms that suggest a Covid-19 infection, such as cough, fever, loss, or change in sense of taste or smell, please do not send your child to school.

“Contact your GP and start restricting your child’s movements,” she added.

“Restricted movement means avoiding contact with other people and social situations as much as possible.”

Confirmed cases of Covid-19 have been detected in five schools in Cork.

On Sunday evening, public health officials informed the parents and guardians of more than 400 children attending Scoil Bhríde, Rathcormac that a case of Covid-19 had been identified.

Last week a case of the virus was confirmed at Scoil Bhríde Eglantine in Douglas and at Scoil Clíodhna in Carrigtwohill.

The virus has been detected in more than 50 schools across the country since schools reopened in late August.
