Supreme Court Justice Seamus Woulfe met with the Chief Justice to discuss Justice Woulfe’s attendance at an Oireachtas Golf Society dinner in Galway.

It is understood that the meeting took place in the Four Courts tonight.

However, a statement is not expected to be issued until early next week.

Four previous meetings had been postponed at the request of Judge Woulfe, three of them for medical reasons.

It is understood that a meeting of Supreme Court justices was held remotely this afternoon, prior to the meeting between the two men.

Seamus Woulfe was appointed to the Supreme Court in July but has yet to sit on the bench due to the ongoing controversy.

He was scheduled to meet with Justice Frank Clarke to discuss the review by former Chief Justice Susan Denham of his attendance at the Clifden dinner in Galway on August 19.

Judge Denham said she shouldn’t have attended the dinner and was not looking at how a Supreme Court justice looked like attending a celebratory dinner in a public place in the midst of a pandemic.

But it found that he did not violate any laws or knowingly violate public health standards. She said the requests for her resignation would be unfair and said the Chief Justice could resolve the matter informally.

A transcript of Judge Woulfe’s interview with Judge Denham was released, putting pressure on the judge.

In general, it was considered that he showed a lack of understanding of the perception of his attendance at the dinner.

In the transcript, Judge Woulfe said that he had told Frank Clarke several weeks earlier that he intended to go to the golf event, although neither of them discussed a dinner.

He claimed that the media, politicians and even some of his colleagues had prejudged him. He also blamed much of the controversy on “all the lies in the media.”

Three high-ranking judges met with Judge Woulfe to begin discussions on the informal resolution process, after which it is understood that he was “shocked” and baffled.

He was then scheduled to meet with the Chief Justice for the first time in early October, but postponed the scheduled meetings until today.
