Captain Seamus Coleman is likely to miss the Republic of Ireland Euro 2020 play-off semi-final in Slovakia through injury.
The 31-year-old full-back limped off Everton’s 4-2 Premier League victory over Brighton on Saturday and Ireland coach Stephen Kenny admitted he was unlikely to be involved after getting a scan of the injury.
“It’s not big news, probably, in relation to Seamus Coleman,” Kenny said. “I was watching the game and I knew immediately when I saw it – it was actually chasing Aaron Connolly at the time, and it just stopped.
“He appears to have a hamstring strain that probably rules it out.”
Kenny had already lost Blackburn defender Darragh Lenihan to a knee injury and is sweating with Nottingham Forest midfielder Harry Arter, who suffered a thigh problem during Saturday’s 2-1 loss at the Sky Bet Championship to Bristol City, and a number of unidentified players.
Nottingham Forest defender Cyrus Christie has been called up to replace Coleman and Burnley center-back Kevin Long replaces Lenihan, who was injured in training last week.
Kenny said Sunday: “There were a lot of phone calls yesterday, the kind of phone calls you probably don’t get in relation to five players.
“Hopefully some will be fine, but obviously a couple have withdrawn from the team through no fault of their own, just unfortunate injuries.
“We had Darragh Lenihan, of course, who was injured in training, a knee injury, with Blackburn and he missed the game on Saturday, so he had to retire.
“We’ll wait and see how Harry Arter is doing. He came out with a slight thigh problem yesterday, so we’ll see how that goes too.
“They are the only ones I can talk about right now.”
No fewer than 11 members of Kenny’s 25-man squad were due to be in action for their clubs on Sunday before traveling to Dublin ahead of the Slovakia game and the UEFA Nations League games against Wales and Finland that follow.
Kenny will wait for word from team members who will play Sunday before calling for backup, but he has already added Burnley defender Kevin Long to the traveling party.
“Kevin Long can consider himself probably quite unfortunate for not being included in the first place,” Kenny said.
“He plays regularly in the Premier League and has played for Ireland and has a good experience so we are delighted to have Kevin in the team.”
“We’ll evaluate everything else and make a call or two maybe later tonight.”
