Paul Scholes has criticized Harry Maguire after his “disturbing” post-match interview following their 3-2 loss to RB Leipzig on Tuesday.

United they were poor – as they usually are – for much of the game and lost 2-0 after 13 minutes, to Maguire and David de Gea crimes committed to concede the third in the second half.

In response to the defeat, Maguire said BT sport: “We started the game too slow, the first 20 minutes weren’t good enough, we weren’t in it and they scored their two chances.”

Scholes was surprised by Maguire’s admission and feels it underscores the big problems that exist within the team.

Speaking about BT Sport, Scholes said: “’Another worrying thing: we talked about leaders in the team, the Harry Maguire interview.

“He said, ‘We weren’t ready for the first 20 minutes. We weren’t in it for the first 20 minutes. ‘

“A great game… how not to be prepared for a game? ‘Such a tough match, coming to Germany, they should never have been in this position in the first place, but they are, and they aren’t ready for the first 20 minutes ?! I think he’s talking about mentality there. “

Ferdinand agreed with Scholes, adding: “You watch the Bayern game at the weekend, it’s an open game, it’s no wonder this RB Leipzig team is going to give you opportunities.

“If you’re just a tight-knit unit at the rear, you know you’re going to have chances in this game, that’s what I don’t understand. The first 15, 20 minutes are vital.

“In any European away game you go to, the first thing you say when you come out of the locker room is: ‘Stand firm here, stay in the game and we’ll have chances.’

And we have seen it here. If you’re not thinking like that before the game starts … it doesn’t seem like they even came out with that little kind of mindset, and it baffles me to see that.
