Battleoverdoyen had been touted as a potential Gold Cup horse by many in the past, but thrived on the descent to an intermediate trip as he galloped to victory in the Lough Construction Ltd. Hunt, while his stablemate Samcro finished in a third place.
The Grade 1 winner was last seen finishing a distant fourth in the RSA Chase at the Cheltenham Festival, but showed an excellent combination of speed and endurance to land the Down Royal swag for jockey Mark Walsh and coach. Gordon Elliott.
Samcro seemed to have a lot on his hands under Jack Kennedy, but a chilling error from three hurdles from home ended his chance, while the favorite 10-11 easy game coached by Willie Mullins was second.
On paper, Battleoverdoyen appeared to be Elliott’s second line, but the coach was not surprised by the result.
“The descent on the trip served him well,” he said. “Jack was also very happy with Samcro, he thought he would have won if he hadn’t made that mistake in the last third. It just took his breath away and a lot will come for it.
“Actually, I wanted to keep Battleoverdoyen for the Hilly Way Chase, but Michael and Eddie [O’Leary] They were right. I called Eddie after the big chase and said ‘are you sure you want to execute him?’ and he said ‘he’s running and winning’. He was right as always! “
The seven-year-old won Grade 1 as a rookie hurdler at this distance, but had campaigned on longer trips during his rookie chase campaign last year, which apparently exposed his resilience.
Battleoverdoyen will remain on this journey going forward, and Elliott confirmed that a rematch with Samcro is on the cards at the Grade 1 John Durkan Memorial Punchestown Chase next month.
“It showed that last year we went too far with him,” he added. “He shows a lot of pace and they could both go for John Durkan in Punchestown.
“There were no excuses. The best horse of the day won.”
