Sam Bennett ready for victory on the final stage of tomorrow’s Tour de France

Sam Bennett is on the brink of history tomorrow. He has a commanding lead in the green jersey race at the 2020 Tour de France, hoping to become the first Irishman since Sean Kelly in 1989 to win the award.

The Waterford man has an almost unassailable lead in the race, with 319 points compared to 264 for runner-up Peter Segan.

Speaking after today’s time trial stage in which he finished 131st, Bennett does not take tomorrow’s final stage for granted despite his enviable position.

I’m still cautious, I still have one more day left. I’m not celebrating until tomorrow night when we bring it home, if we bring it home at all.

But today I am happy to have met the time limit. I had to sit and wait two or three hours praying to stay within the time limit so I could get to Paris.

I’m looking forward to tomorrow…

Tomorrow there will be two steps: the intermediate and the final sprint. Hopefully we can start celebrating …

It will be a dream to arrive on the Champs Elysees with the green jersey, it will be an incredible experience.

If I could win there in the green it would be amazing, but everyone wants to win there.
