It takes more than a global pandemic and 10,000 miles to keep Hollywood star Russell Crowe away from The Late Late Show.
On the Friday night opening episode of the show’s new season on RTÉ One, bould Russell, who is at his home in Australia, made a special video appearance.
At the beginning of the clip, he promises to tell Ryan Tubridy a story in the amount of time it takes him to scoop and brew a pint of stout from his home bar, which features a Guinness tap and framed images of Richard Harris and Brendan. Behan (see below).
Always the showman, Russell delivered.
“This particular story involves a movie that I made in 1994, so I was not yet a famous dog,” she recalled.
“I was famous enough to make international movies and I got to work with an actress named Bridget Fonda. We shot all over Mexico and in Guatemala.
“There was a particular scene that was shot in Los Angeles … when I read it in the script, it says that the character I’m playing is going to be lying on the ground and a tarantula will crawl up his chest, go up his neck, and in their open mouth, so I thought ‘that must be something they’re going to do with special effects or whatever’, on the day, it turns out not.
“They had an animal breeder and he brought some tarantulas and one of the producers took me aside to make sure I was okay because the tarantulas have been milked for their venom so they are not really dangerous …”
“A tarantula the size of my hand is placed on my chest … and ‘action’ … it runs up and into my mouth and then the trainer just pulled it out of my mouth – I mean it, it was a movie of low budget.
“We do a take and I say ‘OK, we did all the things they asked us, can we move on?’ And they said ‘No, we’ll adjust the lights’ and we did it over and over again.
“At one point I spoke to the trainer and said ‘How lucky you can take a tarantula and milk it so they are safer … and he said’ Huh? ‘, So my only safety net wasn’t there. ..
“I’m getting really hot and sweaty now … my heart rate is going up quite a bit.
“My neck is getting wet, I’m hot and sweaty, the tarantula crawls up my neck and stops, opens and pushes me.
“Nine takes with a live tarantula crawling up my chest into my mouth.
“The next day I had this massive rash and I went to the doctor and he told me that apparently at some point, the tarantula has released these fine little hairs and one of them has gotten into the pore of my neck … some of the poison from the tarantula is now in my body.
“Apparently that time it stopped on my neck, the heat, and the particular moisture on my skin … the tarantula found it quite attractive …
“So, anyway, I think, and I must be corrected, in front of Brendan and Mr. Harris having a beer here with you Ryan, and all the people at home, I think I’m the only Oscar winner in history to be f ***** in the neck by a tarantula. Cheers. “
