Runaway cow forces closure of busy Cork highway

Traffic moves freely again after a runaway calf forced the closure of one of Cork’s busiest roads this afternoon.

The animal was earlier seen running down the Lower Glanmire Road entrance lane in Tivoli, the main access road to the city from the east, from the busy Dunkettle interchange.

Video footage posted on social media showed the calf running down the sidewalk, but then turning onto the road and into moving traffic.

The Gardaí was called and several units from the traffic force responded.

It is understood that the owner of the calf was aware of the calf’s bolt for freedom and was in the area with his jeep and a trailer looking for the animal.

In an effort to ensure a safe and swift raid, the gardaí closed the entrance section of the highway near Tivoli and allowed the jeep and trailer to enter the cordon.

A garda spokesman said the raid operation was carried out quickly and effectively.

The calf was herded to the rear of the trailer with relative ease and removed from the scene “safe and sound.”

There were no accidents as a result of the incident and the road was reopened to traffic shortly thereafter.
