According to a little birdie I know, Google plans to change the name from Android TV to Google TV.
That’s. That is the history.
For a quick history lesson, Google has been slowly but surely removing the Android brand from its products for several years. While it’s definitely not going anywhere when it comes to the company’s smartphone operating system (Google gave its beloved Android a facelift last summer), other products have been renamed as Google sees fit.
Google has made it clear repeatedly that the Android brand itself is not going anywhere. We talked to them about it last year, so rest assured that your phone will continue to run “Android” for the foreseeable future. In our opinion, Google’s love for Android and everything the brand means for the last decade of smartphone history has not been clearer.
That said, there are also products where a brand without Android makes more sense.
Some previous examples of the brand have slowly melted in recent years:
- Android Market changed its name to Google Play Store a long time ago
- Android Pay changed its name to Google Pay
- “Android Messages” was renamed only Messages … by Google
- The Google Android Wear portable operating system was renamed Wear OS
- Many applications went without: Google One, Tasks, Allo, Duo, etc.
- and many others…
