Roy Keane believes Manchester United can propel Liverpool to the Premier League title and could be the reigning champion’s closest rival.
The former Manchester United captain has been a fierce critic this season of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team.
But after watching Man Utd dismantle Leeds United 6-2 on Sunday, Keane has acknowledged that his mind has changed.
“I think that in recent months they have been highly criticized, especially for the home record. I have been quite critical of the defenders, the goalkeeper, questioning where this team is going, but the name of this game is showing people wrong “Keane told Sky Sports. “Maybe, just maybe, this group of players can do that.”
The resounding victory over Leeds has taken Manchester United to third place in the league table, five points behind Liverpool, but one game short.
“They’ve been winning games, and that’s all you can do. United is in a great position considering how slow they were off the blocks. If United can get their house in order at home, there’s no reason United can’t. can you stay there.
“I think Liverpool are still the best, but there is no reason why United should think about their chances of pushing Liverpool.”
United’s position in the league standings for Christmas is the best since Sir Alex Ferguson left. This time, 12 months ago, they were just eighth, 24 points from the top.
“Manchester United were excellent,” Keane added. “What Leeds gave United was space. We always thought Leeds were there to take it.
“It’s a huge boost for United. Liverpool are still the strongest, but United could be the best of the rest.”

But while Keane was impressed with Manchester United and optimistic about their prospects, he was disappointed by a subdued Tottenham who meekly surrendered to a 2-0 home loss to Leicester.
Having briefly risen to the top of the league with a win over Arsenal earlier in the month, Tottenham have accumulated just one point out of a possible nine in the past seven days.
“It has been a bad week for Tottenham,” Keane said. “You can tell that Mourinho is furious. There was no spark, there was softness. They need to recover quickly.
“There was no intensity from the Spurs. They never got going and gave away two really bad goals.”
Keane’s most vehement criticism was reserved for Serge Aurier, who conceded the penalty that caused Jamie Vardy to convert at the edge of the break with a misjudged tackle on Wesley Fofana.
“There’s one word to describe it: crazy! I need to be careful what I say about this defender. We’ve been on this road before with him. Totally crazy,” Keane said. “There is no danger, Fofana is not in the goal, Aurier is an experienced player, crazy. I was not thinking, this boy does not think.”
Since joining Tottenham in the summer of 2017, Aurier has conceded four penalties in the Premier League, a tally only dwarfed by David Luiz.
