A Roscommon tavern keeper has said he didn’t know he had to isolate himself while waiting for the results of a Covid-19 test.

Gordon Murray walked into his pub, An Bothar Rua on Saturday night while waiting for his test results, where an 18th birthday party was held, according to The Irish Times.

The pub in Elphin is now closed after Murray subsequently tested positive for the virus, saying there were between 50 and 60 people in the pub when he walked in on the weekend.

“I will raise my hands and say that I did not know that I had to isolate myself. If I had known I was supposed to do it, I wouldn’t have been at the bar on Saturday, ”she said.

Close contacts of those who tested positive in the area are now being traced and public health officials have examined the situation in the community.

Following an increase in cases in the area, the city canceled the First Communion celebrations that were scheduled to take place this Saturday, the Roscommon Herald reported.

The pastor, Father John Joe Gannon, urged the community to follow public health guidelines “to the letter of the law,” while a restaurant owner in town asked people to “put aside the blame game “.

Conal Tiernan of the Elf Inn restaurant said: “He’s actually getting us nowhere by starting this blame game. We want to unite everyone and learn from mistakes. “
