Roscommon’s plans for Saturday’s Allianz Football League clash with Cavan have been interrupted with the announcement that a member of its senior soccer panel tested positive for Covid-19.
A statement released by the Roscommon County Board late Wednesday night confirmed that a player had contracted the coronavirus and is now self-isolating, while an unspecified number of close contacts have been referred for testing and are also isolated. .
The statement read: “A member of the Roscommon Senior Soccer Panel has tested positive for Covid-19.
“Upon receiving instructions from the HSE in conjunction with our medical team, panel members and management who were deemed close contacts have now been referred for testing and have also begun their restricted movement period.
“These panel members and management will only rejoin the panel when deemed safe by HSE.
“Senior management and the football panel have strictly adhered to the HSE and Public Health guidelines at all times.”
Roscommon moved one spot out of promotion to Division 1 with a 3-10-0-15 win over Armagh in their first competitive game in more than seven months last weekend and Saturday’s clash is still expected. with Cavan it goes as planned.
Meanwhile, Offaly’s pitchers’ plans for this weekend’s Christy Ring Cup tie have also been hit hard.
Three players had to withdraw from their Leinster U-20 Hurling Championship victory over Westmeath tonight due to Covid-19 protocols.
And there are fears that several of his senior squad could be considered close contacts of a Covid-19 case.
It is understood that the Offaly board is in contact with HSE officials and if close contacts are considered, those involved will have to isolate themselves, ruling them out of Saturday’s Ring Cup opener against Kildare.
With a 14-day isolation period required, these events may force Offaly to step up to David Herity’s side.
The team is believed to be currently involved in GAA’s rapid testing program.
