McIlroy confirmed that he has been waiting for the call from his wife Erica for the past few weeks, and that he will be heading to the airport as soon as she goes into labor, whether she is in the middle of a tournament round or not.

The news may explain McIlroy’s recent struggles to focus on his game during a series of disappointing results since the coronavirus shutdown, and has made it clear what his top priority is for the next few weeks.

“We are about to be parents very soon, so obviously we are very excited,” McIlroy said after his third round of 73 that put him three strokes behind the BMW Championship leader.

“We’ve been sharing the news with friends and family obviously, but I didn’t think it was something I really needed to share here. It’s a private matter, but we’re so excited and we can’t wait for her to get here.

“I’m just waiting for a phone call and then I get out of here. I was waiting for a phone call last week and it didn’t come, and then Harry has been putting his phone in his pocket just to be sure, but nothing at the moment.”

McIlroy, who appeared to reveal that the pair were expecting a daughter, admitted that it has been more difficult for him to stay focused on the course over the past two weeks knowing he might have to interrupt their tournament at any time.

“The last weeks you are going to play and maybe you don’t know if you are going to finish the round or not,” he added. “That’s definitely not an excuse. I just haven’t played well enough.

“But again, I’m still talking about perspective. If you play badly, I have incredible things on the horizon, which is really cool and makes bad days so much easier to handle.”

McIlroy seems confident that he will withdraw from next week’s Tour Championship, assuming Erica gives birth in the next few days, but he’s determined to put family first.

When asked if he would miss the season finale at East Lake, he said: “Yes, definitely, just depending on what happens. I’m going to play in many more Tour championships and it will only be the birth of your first child once. That beats anything else. “
