The bodies of a man and a woman have been recovered from a submerged car after a major search operation.

Police dive teams located an object believed to be a vehicle a day after a car with two passengers was reported floating along the River Trent between Newark and Nottingham.

Since then, high river levels have hampered efforts to recover the vehicle, but on Saturday, two bodies were removed from the water after the car was located in the riverbed with sonar equipment.

A formal identification has not yet been made, but a family liaison officer has informed family members.

Work is underway, which is being supported by a Newark tugboat, to remove the car.

Inspector Tim Ringer, in charge of the recovery operation, said: “This has been a difficult and complex operation that involved dozens of people from multiple agencies.

“Underwater recoveries of this nature are always very challenging, but the job of our divers has been further complicated by the very fast flowing water at the site.

“It just wasn’t safe to try this job before today.

“Our thoughts remain with the family of the deceased who have asked for their privacy to be respected in what I know is an immensely difficult time.”
