Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand has criticized referee David Coote’s decision to overturn his decision to penalize West Brom at Old Trafford.

West Brom thought they would have a chance to take the lead when Conor Gallagher was brought down by Bruno Fernandes and Coote pointed out the spot.

But the VAR advised the referee to consult the court monitor and decided to reverse his decision.

United went on to win all three points after Fernandes converted a penalty that was retaken after Sam Johnstone came off his line on the first attempt.

Ferdinand was not impressed by Coote’s U-turn.

“It is a shameful decision,” he told BT Sport.

“He did well the first time. It’s a shame nailed.

“How can you go against your own decision on that?”

In his post-game remarks, West Brom boss Slaven Bilic was taken aback by Coote’s actions.

“I am very disappointed with the decision,” Bilic told BT Sport. “I felt like a ‘little West Brom.’

“All of those crucial decisions were against us. I’ve seen it several times and it’s a clear shame.

“I don’t understand why he canceled it.”
