Revenue has warned the public about the additional costs that can occur when purchasing products online.

They said that while some advertised prices may be low, it may be because taxes and duties have not been included.

Online shoppers should note that additional charges may apply once purchased products arrive in Ireland, Revenue cautioned.

“Almost all goods arriving from non-EU countries will be subject to taxes and duties,” said Maureen Dalton, senior director of the Customs Revenue Division.

“If you buy online, you should check if the advertised price includes any taxes and duties due before making a decision to buy the products in question.”

They said that last year, tax officials at postal warehouses across the country charged nearly 100,000 packages and packages. The average rate of duties and VAT per package was € 68.66.

“If the cost of the goods you buy, including transport, insurance and handling costs, exceeds € 22, you will have to pay VAT,” explained Ms. Dalton.

“If your goods alone cost more than € 150, you will have to pay customs duties and VAT.

“For example, if you bought a mobile phone online from China, at an equivalent cost of € 212, you would have to pay an additional € 54.50 in customs duties, VAT, insurance and handling fees.

“When you buy alcohol and tobacco products online from outside the EU, VAT, customs duties and excise duties are paid regardless of the value of your purchase.” “However, online shoppers should also be aware that, while almost all products arriving from EU countries are not subject to taxes or duties, alcohol and tobacco products arriving from another EU member state the EU are subject to excise duties and VAT.

“For example, excise duty, VAT and processing fee on an average case of 12 bottles of sparkling wine, originating in another EU country, could add up to 119.27 euros to the purchase price.” Ms. Dalton cautioned people to be clear about the true costs of anything they buy online before placing an order.

“This will ensure that you do not face any unforeseen additional charges when you receive the delivery.”
