Some of the biggest names in Irish businesses are among the 66,500 companies that benefit from the Government’s Covid-19 wage support scheme.
Companies like Brown Thomas, Volkswagen Group Ireland, Wetherspoons and Kingspan are on the list published by the Commissioners of Revenue of those who have availed themselves of the Temporary Wage Subsidy Program (TWSS).
It saw more than 664,000 employees receive wage subsidies, according to Revenue.
The plan, which was introduced in late March, had the government step in and pay up to 85 percent of the salaries of employees at companies negatively affected by the pandemic.
To qualify, employers had to show that at least 25 percent of their turnover had been wiped out by the crisis and that they could not fully cover normal wage costs. The scheme was designed to encourage employers to keep staff on their books despite the impact of Covid-19.
It ran until the end of August at a cost to the taxpayer of nearly € 3 billion before being replaced by the Worker Wage Subsidy Scheme (EWSS).
Revenue said that not all employers who signed up for TWSS are included on the published list, as some who signed up under the program received no pay while others subsequently completed a “revocation” process from the scheme.
He cautioned that employers who are not eligible for the scheme will have to repay all TWSS payments and meet all underpaid PRSIs. Payments under the TWSS program were not subject to PRSI payments from employees or employers.
