A retiree has died after an accident in West Cork this afternoon.
Emergency services rushed to the scene on the road between Durrus and Kilcrohane after a car crashed into a ditch around 5.55pm
An elderly man, 80 years old, was sadly pronounced dead at the scene and was taken to CUH for an autopsy.
Gardai in Bantry is now asking for witnesses, while the road will be closed overnight while a forensic investigation takes place.
A spokesperson said: “Gardaí is investigating a fatal single vehicle traffic collision that occurred on the L4704 from Durrus to Kilcrohane, in the town of Ahakista, Bantry, Cork tonight on Wednesday 23 December 2020 at approximately 17:00: 55.
Gardaí attended the scene and the car was located in a ditch. The male driver (age 80) was fatally injured. His body was transferred from the scene to the Cork University Hospital morgue, where an autopsy will be performed in due time.
“The road will be closed overnight and a technical examination by forensic collision investigators will take place in the morning. There are local detours.
“Gardaí in Bantry are asking for witnesses or anyone with information to come forward. They are also asking road users who can have camera footage (including dash cam) traveling through the town of Ahakista, to do these images available for Gardaí “.
