A former Scout leader has been released on bail after being charged with 27 sex crimes related to the alleged abuse of Boy Scouts in Cork.
In Cork District Court, David Barry (72) faced a total of 26 counts of sexual or indecent assault and one count of attempted indecent assault.
Garda Detective Gary Duggan from the Bishopstown Garda Station presented evidence of arrest, charge and warning. He said he arrested Mr. Barry at his home in Montrose, Firgrove Gardens in Bishopstown at 7.40am.
He took him to the Togher Garda station, where he was formally charged with crimes at 8:10 a.m. M.
Det Garda Duggan told the court that when asked if Mr. Barry had anything to say in response to the charges, he replied, “No, I don’t know, I am very sorry for anyone I have hurt.”
The charges allege that Barry indecently or sexually assaulted eight children and attempted to indecently assault a ninth child at an address in Cork on various dates between 1986 and 2005.
The boys, who were all members of the Catholic Boy Scouts of Ireland at the time, were between 12 and 16 years old at the time of the alleged crimes.
Det Garda Duggan said the Gardaí had no objection to Barry obtaining bail on the condition that he sign once a week at the Togher Garda station and surrender his passport.
Barry’s attorney, Daithí O’Donnabháin, said his client had no difficulty meeting the terms of the bond.
Sergeant Gearoid Davis said the DPP had ordered the matter to be tried on indictment before a judge and jury at the circuit court level and requested a six-week postponement until January 27.
Det Garda Duggan said he would be in a position to deliver the evidence book on that date, and Judge Olann Kelleher released Mr. Barry on bail, to appear in court on January 27.
O’Donnabháin requested a ban on the identification of his client, who is a former Scout troop leader, in media reports, but Judge Kelleher refused, saying the only order he would make was not to identify the parties. injured.
O’Donnabháin said his client was a retired businessman and that he would prepare a media statement in due course in support of a future request for free legal aid.
