The HSE will begin relocating residents of a Kerry nursing home at the center of a Covid-19 outbreak that has claimed eight lives as it says it is no longer “sustainable” so it can continue to run the home.

The agency was hired to manage Oaklands Nursing Home in Derry, Listowel last Thursday after Hiqa canceled its registration certificate. The action was taken after the death of the first six residents.

There were also a number of inspections throughout the year that showed various regulations in the home had been violated.

The HSE has begun to discuss with the families of the 23 residents of the house about their transfer.

He said they are expected to leave “before Christmas.” The process is expected to begin around mid-December.

Relatives of those who died at the start of the outbreak are furious that Hiqa did not take action earlier against the house, which was run by Listowel-based Bolden (Nursing) Ltd.

Local Sinn Féin TD Pa Daly said: “I will now ask the government to open an HSE-run community nursing home in the North Kerry area. The Oaklands nursing home situation illustrates one’s dire need.

“I have relatives now very worried because they will not be able to find local accommodation for their loved ones.”

A spokesperson for HSE said: “We have looked at options that will provide residents with the best possible care and have engaged with the owner regarding any plans they have for the future of service.

“As the owner has not informed us of any plans for their business, we are now examining other options to ensure that each resident receives the best possible care in a stable, long-term location.

“It is not sustainable for HSE to continue as the temporarily registered provider at this location.”

The HSE said he does not own the home.

“Our role under the Health Act as a temporary provider is to make long-term arrangements for residents in appropriate settings,” he added.
