Several residents have been moved from a direct supply center in Cork following a significant Covid-19 outbreak.
Residents are understood to have been taken out of the center in taxis last night and have been asked to self-isolate.
The current scale of the outbreak at the Kinsale Road Housing Center in Cork is not yet known, although a letter from the HSE to residents earlier this week described it as “potentially very serious.”
Nine positive cases had been identified as of Tuesday night, but this number is believed to have increased significantly.
The center itself houses more than 250 people.
After the outbreak was first reported earlier this week, residents were asked to restrict their movements as much as possible. It is understood that the majority of residents had not received a test for Covid-19 as of Tuesday.
It is not known where the residents transferred during their period of isolation will be located.
One of the center’s residents, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said that people at the center were left in “a desperate situation.”
The resident said: “One group of residents was transferred in the morning and another group was transferred at night.
“There were ten or 12 taxis outside and people were moving most of the day. I don’t think they were told they were going to move them.”
The resident speculated that between 30 and 40 people were taken out of the center.
Those who remain in the center have been told to stay in their rooms and isolate themselves.
However, the resident says this is “extremely difficult” given that the people who live in the center share common kitchen and laundry areas.
“We need to get water, food and we have a community laundry.
“We’re running out of water and timing, but I don’t feel safe to go get it, honestly. My wife said she would go get it, but I don’t feel safe for her either.
“If you knew that people who maybe tested positive were getting water, how could you go there?
The resident said that they and their family members had received all the negative tests, but that others at the center had not yet received a test result, so there is a lot of “uncertainty” at the center at this time.
“I have a little one and there are others like us who have small children, so it is difficult to stay in our rooms.
“I no longer feel safe living here with my children.
“If they could transfer those of us who tested negative to a personal care center where we could do our own thing, it would be a huge relief to us.”
