A committee from Oireachtas is asking the government to introduce a fast and safe way to travel to and from North America.
The Joint Committee on Transportation and Communications Networks has compiled a report urging the coalition to agree on a coronavirus testing system with the US and Canada, so that Irish citizens can travel to and from both countries without the need to restrict your movements.
A report, to be released by the commission today, will also set out steps on ways to boost recovery in the aviation sector.
The committee also calls for PCR testing for air passengers to be capped at 50 euros to encourage acceptance. Currently, PCR tests are available at Irish airports at a cost of € 129.
Fianna Fáil Senator Timmy Dooley, a member of the committee, proposed the recommendation, saying that capping the price to 50 euros would ensure affordability and wider acceptance.
He also said that a recommendation to agree test protocols with the US and Canada should be completed by Christmas.
“The government must quickly recognize that the aviation sector needs certainty going forward and people must hear that the government is committed to the recovery of the sector,” said Senator Dooley.
Other recommendations from the Oireachtas report include the adoption of a traffic light system for countries outside the EU.
It also calls for the Airport Fee Refund Program to be extended until September, which would benefit the airlines.
The committee said antigen testing before departure should be mandatory for people arriving from orange and red countries, so they don’t have to restrict their movements upon arrival.
The full report will be posted at 11 a.m. M.
