Republic of Ireland coach Stephen Kenny will meet with FAI Acting Director General Gary Owens to discuss the video shown to the team ahead of the England game at Wembley.

The FAI announced on Thursday that it had launched an investigation “as a matter of urgency” into a video that was shown to the Republic of Ireland players before last Thursday’s game.

Members of the governing body met Thursday night to discuss issues related to the video that was shown to players at the team hotel on game day before Kenny gave his speech to the team.

The three-minute video is understood to contain memorable moments from his recent football past, including goals against England, but also contained 30 seconds of historic moments from Anglo / Irish history, including footage from the 1916 Easter Rising.

The FAI said in a statement Thursday: “The Irish Football Association is aware of issues related to content shared with our Republic of Ireland senior men’s team ahead of the recent international friendly against England at Wembley Stadium.

“The FAI is already investigating this internally as a matter of urgency, in order to establish the facts. The FAI has no further comment to make at this time.”

Ireland avoided relegation to Nations League C this week by leading Bulgaria to a 0-0 draw in Dublin as they completed 2020 without a win, the first time they have not won in a calendar year since 1971.

While the draw was enough to prevent relegation, it is not likely to be enough for Ireland to retain their spot in pot 2 for the World Cup qualifying draw on 7 December.

These are decided on the FIFA rankings, which is expected to drop from their current 20th spot by the end of the month and place them in the 3 hardest pot.
