A young student is receiving treatment at Cork University Hospital on Tuesday afternoon after he was hit by a motorcycle while being dropped off at school.
The incident occurred shortly before 9 am outside Colaiste Choilm in Ballincollig, when the student got out of a vehicle as a motorcyclist passed.
Gardai and emergency services arrived at the scene immediately, and the boy was taken to CUH, where he is being treated for a non-life-threatening shoulder / collarbone injury.
The incident comes just a couple of weeks after bollards were placed between the bike path and Carrigrohane Road, and Councilor Colm Kelleher told Cork Beo that its location outside the school has “exacerbated” the already dire traffic situation. at peak times.
“This raises the problem of newly placed bollards in the area,” he said. “They were installed to protect cyclists in the lanes. Cars were parked in bike lanes, even if it’s illegal, to drop off their children.
“What seems to be happening since the bollards were put up is that cars are now stopped in traffic on the highway and children are leaving vehicles on the main road, which is dangerous and has resulted in an accident this morning.
“The councilors of the area were not notified about the construction of the bollards, and several voters have highlighted that it is a recipe for disaster and, sadly, they have been shown to be correct,” he added.
“In no way am I saying that people should illegally park in the bike lanes, but for this to be implemented and an accident to occur so soon afterwards, I think they contributed to the incident.
“I don’t know what the solution is. Our cyclists need to be protected, of course. But something must also be implemented to make it easier for students to be dropped off at school ”.
The school in question has a large parking lot in the front and back of the building, although the councilor stated that the increase in traffic outside the school is due to a lack of car sharing and increased bus use due to the Covid-19.
“I wondered if the timing was right when the bollards were installed due to Covid and the duplication of buses due to decreased capacity, and the fact that fewer students share the elevators to school.
“There are 1,200 students in the school and teachers. An off-campus parking lot has never been designated, which itself has exceeded capacity and we were promised a third high school in the area.
“Parents are using the interchange road now, and buses are parking at Healy’s Bar and the bollards have exacerbated the situation, which was bad to begin with, adding fuel to the fire.”

More bollards will be installed along the highway, he said.
“I understand that the bollards will continue through Poulavone to the roundabout,” he added.
“It is a main artery, I have no problem with that, but there are more bollards planned for the town.
“I would like to congratulate the emergency services, they were on the scene in a matter of minutes. My thoughts are with the injured boy’s family. “
