Dozens of people continued to protest George Nkencho’s death Sunday, when TD Brid Smith criticized social media posts falsely claiming the young man had multiple convictions.
Nkencho was shot and killed by Gardai after a clash in Clonee, west of Dublin, last Wednesday.
Today, for the fourth day, there was a peaceful demonstration in front of Blanchardstown Garda station.
It comes after it emerged that social media posts claiming that Nkencho, who suffered from mental health issues, had a series of convictions, which was completely untrue as he had none.
TD Brid Smith urged people to consider fact rather than fiction.
She said: “What saddens me is how many decent people believe the lies. George Nkencho, shot to death by Gardai last week, was a man with mental health problems, but NO CRIMINAL HISTORY. “
She added: “I don’t intend to respond to the vile and insulting things that racists say about me, but I ask ordinary decent people to consider the facts, the REAL facts and ask themselves’ what if I was your son, your brother, your friend …? ‘”
Yesterday members of the black community urged people not to resort to violence and to let the investigation run its course.
A spokeswoman for the social media page Black and Irish said: “We are extremely devastated by the news of George Nkencho’s death.
“Emotions are extremely high right now and emotions are still very raw. So the frustration and anger felt throughout the community is fully justified.
“However, we cannot resort to violence. Violence will not help George’s memory or his family. Let’s not feed that narrative about how we are supposed to act as a black community.
“What we have to do now is come together as a black community and find proactive and strategic ways to make sure this doesn’t happen to anyone again.
“There is currently an investigation underway, so let’s not hamper that investigation. We have to wait for more information to come out. It just takes one more incident to make things worse for everyone. So we can’t act in anger. “
