More than 100 people have gathered for a demonstration in Dublin following Garda’s fatal shooting of a man on Wednesday.

Protesters carrying signs reading “Justice for George” and “Black Lives Matter” gathered outside Blanchardstown Garda station on Thursday afternoon, saying their rally will continue for fourteen days.

As a result, a section of Navan Road is closed to traffic.

It occurs when George Nkencho (27) was shot at least three times in his front garden by members of the Blanchardstown Armed Support Unit (ASU) while allegedly brandishing a knife and threatening Gardaí.

The Tánaiste has offered its condolences to Mr. Nkencho’s family, adding that its thoughts are with the gardaí and the store workers involved in the incident.

In a series of tweets, Leo Varadkar also urged no “speculation on social media” about the fatal incident, saying it was “useless at this stage”.

Investigators from the Garda Ombudsman are ready to examine video footage of the shooting that took place outside Mr. Nkencho’s family home on Manorfields Drive in Clonee, west of Dublin.

The incident began shortly after noon on Wednesday when Nkencho, according to eyewitnesses, entered a Eurospar supermarket in Hartstown where he struck a manager in the face.

He reportedly pulled a knife from his pocket and brandished it towards staff, then moved to the Post Office section of the Hartstown Mall, and an unarmed Gardaí arrived shortly after.

At least 12 unarmed Gardaí followed Mr. Nkencho out of the store and through various housing estates while signaling him to drop the knife.

When Mr. Nkencho arrived in his front yard around 12:30 pm, the ASU had arrived to take over the operation, which is when fatal shots were fired.

In a statement, An Garda Síochána said she used a “gradual police response” after being threatened with a knife, which is believed to have involved the use of pepper spray and tasers.

Gardaí said attempts to use less than lethal force to resolve the incident were unsuccessful.

After the shooting, members of the ASU administered first aid before paramedics from the Dublin Fire Brigade arrived and began CPR.

Mr. Nkencho was taken to James Connolly Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead shortly thereafter.
