Former Debenhams employees have impeded the efforts of liquidators KPMG to withdraw stock from stores in Newbridge, Co Kildare and Blackrock, Co Dublin.
Yesterday, joint liquidators Andrew O’Leary and Kieran Wallace notified the Mandate syndicate that they would begin taking stock this morning to advance the liquidation.
Last week, the liquidators got an order from the Superior Court preventing people from preventing the stock removal.
Gardaí attended the protest in Newbridge this morning, where former employees prevented the liquidators’ van from entering the premises.
It is understood that the names of some protesters were taken in light of the existing court order.
Some 15 former workers are currently gathered at the back door of the Debenhams facility.
The protesters said a truck arrived shortly after 8 a.m., but the protesters asked the driver not to pass the official picket line.
Gardaí arrived after an hour of a confrontation between the driver and the protesters, whom they described as “friendly.”
The protesters confirmed that gardaí had taken the names of seven people under the Public Order Law for obstruction of traffic.
Mark O’Brien, who worked at Debenhams for nearly 15 years, said he expected the names to be referred to Superior Court.
The picketers remain in place.
Similar scenes are understood to have occurred at Debenhams’ Blackrock store, when a pickup truck arrived and attempts were made to unload packing materials.
However, sources said the van left after about 20 minutes.
