Gardaí in Galway is investigating the circumstances surrounding an incident outside the city last night, during which N84 was blocked from traffic.

Several people gathered on a stretch of the main road from Galway to Castlebar shortly after 10 p.m., preventing traffic from moving in any direction around the Carrowbrowne area.

It is understood that the protesters opposed the presence of Garda traffic control points in the town, with the aim of preventing the spread of Covid-19.

Garda’s reinforcements were called to the scene and protesters ended their blockade at 11 p.m. No arrests were made.

Regular vehicle checks have been carried out on the N84 for the past week, after concerns about enforcing restrictions on the movement of people and non-essential travel.

Gardaí says they are conducting a series of traffic checks at various locations in the city and county as part of the ongoing strategy to reduce the spread of Covid-19.
