Prince William “struggled to breathe” after being struck by Covid-19, The Irish Sun can reveal.
The Duke of Cambridge kept his diagnosis a secret because he did not want to alarm the UK.
The 38-year-old heir to the throne contracted the virus in April, days after the father, Prince Charles, and the prime minister, Boris Johnson, were assassinated.
William told an observer at an engagement: “Big things were happening and I didn’t want to worry anyone.”
The duke was treated by palace physicians and followed government guidelines by isolating himself at the Anmer Hall family home in Norfolk.
Surprisingly, he made 14 engagements by phone and video calls during April.
‘AS USUAL’
A source said: “William was hit quite a bit by the virus – he actually left six.”
“At one point, he was struggling to breathe, so obviously everyone around him was quite scared.
“After seeing the doctors and testing positive, which was obviously a huge shock given how fit and healthy he is, William decided he should continue as usual.
“He was determined to keep his commitments.”
After news broke of Boris and Charles’s illnesses, and Boris had been rushed to hospital, William was concerned that informing the country about his own situation would cause everyone to panic.
“The Queen gave her ‘We will meet again’ speech, and she just didn’t want to worry people.
“He felt that more important things were happening in the country.
“But as a result of his own experiences, he realizes that absolutely anyone can get this terrible disease, and he knows how imperative it is that we all take this second block seriously.”
Important things were happening and he didn’t want to worry anyone.

Despite his illness, Wills was one of the hardest working royals in April.
He telephoned the NHS heroes at Queen’s Hospital Burton on April 1 and told his colleagues from consultant Amged El-Hawrani, 55, who died of the virus while treating patients, that he was “proud.” From his job.
The father of three had a seven-day break from calls and video messages after April 9.
But on April 16, Nightingale Hospital Birmingham opened at the NEC via video link.
He told them it was a “wonderful example” of the “union” that is happening across the country to fight the pandemic.
Then, on April 23, the Duke brought much-needed cheer to Comic Relief.
Wills raised smiles after filming a sketch several days earlier to be broadcast on the BBC.
The Duke took a comedic turn alongside Stephen Fry in a Blackadder-themed sketch.
He was then filmed standing in the front door of his home in Anmer Hall with Kate, 38, and George, 7, Charlotte, 5, and Louis, two.
Wills and his family helped lead the nation in Clap for Carers that night.
During April, when Wills was shot down, he also spoke to the FA about mental health and called the Crown Prince of Jordan.
The Queen delivered her moving address to the nation on Sunday, April 6, the same night that PM Boris was taken to the hospital.
Earlier this week, William offered his support to Good Britain star Kate Garraway, whose husband, Derek Draper, has spent seven months in the hospital with coronavirus.
Together with his wife Kate, the couple told the presenter that they wanted to give him “a hug” in the wake of the battle for her husband’s health.
The Cambridge family said they were touched by her experience and how it had impacted her and her children Darcey, 14, and Billy, 11.
Prince Charles was isolated for two weeks in March with mild symptoms, while Boris spent three nights in the ICU after being hospitalized on April 5.
Kensington Palace declined to comment last night.
