President Trump nominates Barrett to Supreme Court

President Donald Trump nominated Amy Coney Barrett to fill the Supreme Court seat that was left vacant following the death of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg.

s Barrett, a Chicago-based judge of the United States Court of Appeals for the Seventh Circuit and a devout Roman Catholic, has been hailed by religious conservatives and others on the right as the ideological heir to the staunch conservative Antonin Scalia, the late judge of the Supreme Court for whom she said.

But liberals say their legal views are too influenced by their religious beliefs and fear that their rise to the highest court in the nation could lead to a reduction in disputed abortion rights.

President Trump praised Ms. Barrett as “a woman of remarkable intellect and character,” and said he had studied her background closely before choosing.

“I watched and studied, and you are eminently qualified,” he said as Mrs. Barrett stood beside him in the Rose Garden.

Barrett was considered a finalist in 2018 before President Trump nominated Justice Brett Kavanaugh for the position that was vacated when Justice Anthony Kennedy retired.

At just 48 years old, Ms. Barrett would be the youngest judge and her tenure could last for decades.
