Síoda was one half of a much loved Burmese mountain dog duo, Bród and Síoda, who never left the president’s side and often attended engagements with him.

They often stole the show at events and accompanied the president, capturing the hearts of many who met the two furry creatures.

While Sioda is known to have been ill for a period of time, she was also missed when the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge, William and Kate, visited Ireland in March; however, it was reported at the time that the dog had just undergone an operation on its paw.

President Higgins has previously spoken proudly about his pets.

He said in an interview on Today FM: “Dogs are very popular, in fact there was a group today – one of the many groups that visit – and when I went to say goodbye to them they said, ‘but we don’t have’ seen the dogs.

“They are a very sociable breed of dog and are very safe with children.

“I’ve had dogs my whole life … they are both beautiful dogs.”

This is not the first time the president has lost one of his two companion dogs, and Shadow passed away in 2018.
