The cabinet will meet today to discuss the possibility of introducing gradual fines for violating Covid-19 restrictions.
The issue of imposing fines of 50 to 200 euros for disobeying various regulations is something that experts have mentioned frequently recently.
A senior government source recently told the Irish Mirror that everything related to the fines was “under review”, but that it was not yet being worked on.
However, the issue will now be discussed at the Covid-19 Cabinet Committee meeting on Friday.
Fines can range from not wearing masks in stores to traveling outside of your county when the measures are in effect.
Not wearing masks on public transport currently merits a € 2,500 fine.
The news comes after Stephen Donnelly told the Dail that he heard about “serious concerns” and the possibility of “additional restrictions” in a phone call with the Medical Director Sunday morning.
But the embattled Health Minister has insisted that the “first time in history” he heard of a possible return to Level 5, the total lockdown, was in a subsequent call Sunday night.
And the National Public Health Emergency Team is still “enthusiastic” that the country should have moved into total lockdown on their advice.
The NPHET members met again on Thursday and it is believed that they did not back down on their controversial recommendation on Sunday, which was to move the entire country to the Level 5 lockdown.
It is understood that they have recommended in their advice to the government that a total lockdown will remain the best way to get the virus back under control.
But for both sides to get along, they are not repeating their call for escalation to Level 5 and are satisfied that the Government allows the country to remain at Level 3 for now.
