Jurgen Klopp has confirmed for the first time that Trent Alexander-Arnold missed the preseason due to coronavirus.
Rumors abounded in August after the right-back missed the preseason trip to Austria and then the Community Shield, then failed to show his best form in the early part of the season before succumbing to a calf injury.
His replacement Neco Williams was excellent against Ajax on Tuesday night, scoring the only goal of the game for Curtis Jones.
Perhaps Curtis Jones has earned the right to be ‘arrogant’
“The season started after a really difficult summer with blocking and no one knew when we could continue,” Klopp said. “We had a short preseason and then all of a sudden Trent came out with Covid, he has to play early and he wasn’t in the best shape at the time. That can happen to all players ”.
Klopp also revealed that he and Williams had a “long talk” after the German took him away at halftime of Saturday’s 1-1 draw with Brighton.
Both agreed that the Welshman had failed to realize his potential in recent weeks, prompting Klopp to favor James Milner as a right back.
