Policy talks on cross-border travel from Donegal and NI

Medical chiefs from both sides of the border will meet tomorrow via video link to discuss crafting a coordinated approach to reduce travel between Northern Ireland and Co Donegal.

Taoiseach Micheál Martin spoke separately on the subject tonight with Stormont Prime Minister Arlene Foster and Deputy Prime Minister Michelle O’Neill.

They agreed on the need for a “pragmatic and practical” policy aimed at reducing travel between jurisdictions, except for work, educational or exemption reasons.

There is a particular concern about travel between Donegal and the area around Derry.

While Donegal currently has the highest infection rate per 100,000 residents south of the border, Derry and Strabane are the worst areas in Northern Ireland.

Acting Chief Medical Officer Dr. Ronan Glynn and Northern Ireland Chief Medical Officer Dr. Michael McBride will speak on the matter tomorrow morning.
