Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wants Paul Pogba’s agent Mino Raiola to realize that football is about teams rather than individuals after commenting on his client’s future at the club on the eve of Manchester United’s departure of the Champions League.
The 27-year-old capped an impressive performance with a goal in Saturday’s 3-1 win at West Ham and then spoke about the need to stay focused on RB Leipzig’s crucial clash and derby against Manchester City.
But preparation for Tuesday’s key Group H match in Germany was dominated by Pogba’s Old Trafford future after Raiola claimed his dissatisfied client would not sign a new deal and wanted to leave.
The French international came off the bench against Leipzig and almost inspired a comeback, but it wasn’t enough and the 3-2 loss means United will play the Europa League, whether they’re the midfielder or not.
“You have to ask Paul if he’s happy or unhappy,” Solskjaer told BT Sport.
“I’m not going to speak for him. He’s focused on doing what’s best for the team when he’s here.
“He’s working hard in training and he just needs to focus on his performances.
“Now is not the time to discuss transfer goals and the ins and outs.”
Pogba’s jump and header forced United’s second goal at Leipzig, where his stoppage time cross nearly became an own goal by Nordi Mukiele.
But in the end Solskjaer’s side had been left with a mountain to climb after a poor start where they didn’t seem fully focused.
“The team is doing well,” the United manager said at the press conference when asked about the impact of Raiola’s comment.
“They’re a team and they stick together. As soon as Paul’s agent realizes this is a team sport and we work together, the better.
“That’s probably the last thing I’ll say about it. I don’t want to waste energy on that.”
When asked if he had spoken to Pogba about Raiola’s latest comments, Solskjaer said, “You know, what we’re talking about in the background is something else. Like I said, I’m not going to talk about Paul’s agent anymore.”
