Dublin City Council has approved new plans for a two school campus in Sandymount despite strong local opposition.

The council has granted planning permission to the Department of Education for a two-story Educate Together elementary school and a three-story Educate Together post-elementary school on the five-acre campus of Rosyln Park College.

The post-primary school will have capacity for 1000 students, while the elementary school will have 24 classrooms. The site currently houses a 12-classroom temporary school with 324 students enrolled.

The council received 59 separate objections in response to plans first presented last November and a series of follow-up objections after the department presented revised plans in July.

Opponents include the Sandymount and Merrion Residents Association, which stated that the scale of the project is neither necessary nor commensurate with the surrounding area and is based on unrealistic assumptions.

The department paid the Rehabilitation Group € 20.5 million for the site, which according to the Comptroller and Auditor General was € 4 million more than the amount established in an independent valuation report.
