Philomena told Tommy that his experience in the confinement started off positively as he came out to applaud the HSE and sing songs for his neighbors. However, over time the experience became increasingly difficult.

She said: “I would never consider retiring, Covid has been the worst thing that has happened to me in my life, I would say because the first part was great because the weather was good.

“Aiden and I used to clap for the HSE. Aiden would put the equipment in the back of his house and he and I would go out. Every night at 8 o’clock he would sing ‘The Way Old Friends Do,’ we had backing tracks and the Neighbors were at the door applauding and, as the weeks went by, they began to come down. “

The country star also opened up about her successful career to date and shared some words of wisdom for the younger generation of country music stars.

She said, “The younger generation, most of them will be doing old or American stuff anyway. But if I could give you a little advice, make sure you’re singing for the audience, not yourself.

“A lot of them are singing American things that are not related to the audience or the people who are there to dance. I do my thing, many of the songs that I am singing I have been doing for the last fifty years and that is what the people want to see. “

Philomena added that although she will ‘release’ some new songs from time to time, her song list is ‘almost the same as when I (she) started’.

Viewers of the RTE One show flooded Twitter with praise for the country music star following her performance of ‘The Way Old Friends Do’ on tonight’s show.

One user wrote: “She still has a strong voice. 60 years on the road. Fair play for Philomena Begley.”

Another added: “What a lady, what a voice.”

A third said, “Like country music or not, he still has a great voice.”
