Peter Keane questioned about Kerry’s management setup

Kerry’s manager Peter Keane is under pressure to reorganize his management and backroom team ahead of the 2021 season.

Discussions between the County Board and Kingdom Chief Keane are expected to continue in the run-up to Christmas, as the fallout continues from Munster SFC’s dramatic semi-final loss to Cork in Páirc Uí Chaoimh.

Initial meetings have already taken place between management and members of the Board executive where the composition of Keane’s backroom team was discussed. The manager has also met separately with his back room team.

Idle speculation about team riots and player ultimatums are unfounded, but they have rallied as a group since the loss in Cork and there is dissatisfaction with the coach’s setup since Donie Buckley’s poorly explained departure last March.

With the announcement of Buckley’s departure just before the country crashed, there was little public discourse on the behind-the-scenes tensions that led to his departure, but his coaching job garnered universal approval from the team. Players believe that his failure to replace Buckley and his skills compromised their preparation for the Championship this fall.

Before the Cork game, Peter Keane was asked about Buckley’s departure and said: “I guess there is water under the bridge. What I can say is that we parted ways, I don’t get into individual discussions that I have with either of the members. of management or players. They have privileged discussions all the time and that would be a violation of them. That’s where it is. “

Keane is heading into the final year of his three-year tenure at a time when Kerry is also looking for a new U-20 coach following the departure of John Sugrue. Irish winners Declan O’Sullivan, Kieran Donaghy, Marc Ó Sé, Seamus Moynihan, Tomas Ó Sé and senior manager Tommy Griffin have been promoted as potential candidates for the position. However, the Board executive may consider the role as part of a broader management pathway strategy in the Kingdom.

As it stands, there are very few candidates ready to rise to the position of senior manager without going back to being Ireland’s former winning bosses. Current coach Maurice Fitzgerald is probably the leading candidate in that regard.

County Board President Tim Murphy said at a Board meeting this week that a full review of this year’s soccer performance was underway. John Mitchels’ club delegate Pat McAuliffe said at the meeting: “I am pleased to hear (the president) say that there will be a review of the entire operation of the senior soccer team management committee soon.”

He continued: “I think it’s important in view of what happened against Cork. I know we lost, but you have to analyze the way we prepare. It doesn’t bode well for some of the young forwards we have in the county when we had two defensive players at the mid-front line and the best target player we have (Tommy Walsh) in the county was hired as a corner in the final minutes. Things like that have to be reviewed and analyzed. We can’t keep making the same mistakes. ”

The president commented, “I will certainly bring the points you are making to management.”
