The government may ask the public to limit its close family contacts only during the Christmas period, as it examines ways to prevent a further increase in Covid-19 cases when the latest severe social restrictions are lifted.

Officials are considering what “modified” measures could take effect from December 1, when the six-week level 5 lockdown ends.

Among these are social restrictions under which the public will be asked to maintain “family oriented” contacts, especially during Christmas.

Restaurants are expected to get the green light to reopen, but there is growing pessimism that pubs that don’t serve food may.
