Paul McGrath has published an emotional tribute to his mother Betty, after her death.

The former Republic of Ireland international described his mother as his “best friend” and said it “breaks my heart.” He said, “I owe you everything.”

In an interview last year with the Irish Independent, McGrath spoke of addressing his demons, saying he found himself “shipwrecked in the rooms of the mind.”

“Somehow, a lifeboat was always coming. If the rescue ship had a name on the hull, it could have read ‘Betty.’

“I think it was thanks to my mom’s help that I got so far. My mom has always been there. Even when I was in an orphanage, she always came to see me. So I never had that disconnect. She was always the thread.

“If something ever happened in my life, I could get close and I knew Mom would always show up.”

McGrath was inducted into the Irish Soccer Hall of Fame last month. McGrath, who has been capped 83 times, played for the Republic of Ireland at Euro 88 and also at the 1990 and 1994 World Cups.
