The Irish Patients Association (IPA) says health officials must urgently investigate why so many people do not show up for Covid-19 tests.
The HSE said that up to a quarter of appointments at some of its centers were not kept.
Yesterday, 95 more people were reported to have tested positive for the virus and no deaths were recorded.
IPA’s Stephen McMahon says all the absences could add up to dozens of lost cases.
“There is something wrong here: We are not connecting with these people to get tested,” McMahon said.
“So it’s a system failure because you can’t connect with these people to get them back.
“But I think this is really a question for NPHET and the Minister to come up with some solutions to ensure that we can make these absences show up.
“There are almost 100 people a week who will test positive due to the huge number of people who do not show up.”
McMahon said it’s important for HSE to be able to say what efforts they have made to connect with people who miss their appointments.
“What follow-up are the GPs doing? They are the ones doing the referrals.”
