A school in the city of Cork has confirmed a positive case of Covid-19.
Scoil Bhríde Eglantinein Douglas notified parents of the news today.
Confirmation of the Covid-19 case at Eglantine Elementary School in Douglas over the weekend prompted parents to seek more information at the school and whether children and families need to isolate themselves or restrict their movements.
The school principal, Eoin Kennedy, informed parents by email late Sunday night that a case of Covid-19 was confirmed among the “school community.”
Kennedy, also committed to the Cork branch of the National Public Health Team.
The principal did not say if the case was confirmed among the 550 students or among the school staff, but the
understands that the case refers to a student who attends school. In an “urgent” letter to the parents, the director confirmed that he was communicating with public health officials regarding the confirmed case and had also contacted the “relevant families”.
Kennedy also recommended that parents send their children to school “normally” on Monday, unless instructed otherwise.
“I am writing to inform you that we have a confirmed case of Covid-19 within our school community. I have been collaborating with the local Cork team of the National Public Health Team, ”Kennedy wrote.
“I have contacted all relevant families at this time as informed me. If I have not contacted you by phone, please send your daughter to school as usual tomorrow. Our school will be open for all classes as usual, ”he added.
However, some parents said they were “shocked” by the way the news was spread and are seeking more information from the school.
“I sent my daughter to school this morning because I didn’t see the email and I hope a lot of other parents don’t. It would have been better to send the parents a text message rather than an email, ”said a concerned parent at
.“The letter did not contain information and only confirmed one case of Covid-19 and that the school was open normally,” they added.
“We need to know what class the confirmed case is related to so that we, as parents, can identify any interactions with our children and if we should stay home,” they continued.
“I would be concerned if it was my daughter’s class as my grandmother is over 90 and would be vulnerable to the virus and it may be the case that we need to take extra precautions and stay home and that is something I would consider, but I just don’t have that information right now, ”they added.
The newspaper has contacted the school for an update.
School continues for all other students.
