Parcel Motel, a parcel collection service, will suspend its virtual address service in the UK on December 28 due to the impact of Brexit.
Parcel Motel had offered online shoppers in the Republic of Ireland a way to circumvent international shipping restrictions and additional costs by allowing them to pay for the use of their ‘Virtual Address’, which would see packages shipped first to the warehouse of the company at Newtownabbey in Co Antrim, before being distributed across the country.
However, the company will no longer accept deliveries to the Newtownabbey facility as of December 28 and service will be “suspended” on December 31.
“As of December 31, our virtual address services in the UK will be temporarily suspended, until a final decision on Brexit is implemented and our services have been adapted to meet the new requirements,” the company said.
Parcel Motel said this is because the UK is leaving the single market and the customs union.
“As a result, all packages crossing the new border between Great Britain and Ireland will be subject to customs formalities which will affect the cost and transit time of their shipment,” he said.
The company said it was working on a new offering to meet post-Brexit requirements and will consider reintroducing the service.
The company is also suspending its service that allowed customers to send and return packages to the UK on December 31.
“Packages traveling back to the UK from Ireland will be subject to customs formalities which affect the cost and transit time of your shipment.
“Therefore, we will also suspend these services and you will notice that some retailers have been removed from our website. Parcel Motel will accept return shipments until December 30,” he said.
“When shipping packages to the UK after this date we recommend that you check the retailer’s website for recommended return methods,” he added.
Parcel Motel lockers for other deliveries and the virtual Ireland address will continue to function normally.
