The Pandemic Unemployment Payment (PUP) payment rates will change starting today.
PUP will go from two types of payment to three types, causing some people to lose € 100 a week.
The amount a recipient will receive will depend on their previous income.
The changes to the PUP were announced as part of the labor stimulus package in July.
The Government has said that the fee a recipient will receive will depend on the amount they previously earned:
- If they earned more than € 300 per week, they will now receive € 300 per week.
- If they were earning between € 200 and € 300 per week, the pandemic unemployment payment rate will now be € 250 per week.
- If they earned less than € 200 per week, the pandemic unemployment payment rate will be € 203 per week (there is no change to this rate).
The impact of the changes will be seen from September 22.
People who receive PUPs will not have to contact the Department of Social Protection about their income.
“The Department has access to this information from the Revenue Commissioners and will contact PUP recipients prior to these changes to inform them of their new pay rate,” a statement said.
Earlier this week, the Government announced that PUP will be open to new applicants until the end of 2020.
On Tuesday, Social Protection Minister Heather Humphreys obtained Cabinet approval to extend the date.
A statement read: “This means that anyone who loses their job as a result of the pandemic after September 17 will be able to benefit from the appropriate PUP rate.
“It also means that anyone unlucky enough to get fired a second time will be able to use PUPs.”
To date, more than 3.5 billion euros have been paid under the PUP.
