Pakistan: Millions of people in the dark after the failure of the national power grid | World News

Pakistan’s national power grid has experienced a major collapse, leaving millions of people in the dark, government officials said.

“A nationwide blackout has been caused by a sudden drop in frequency in the power transmission system,” Energy Minister Omar Ayub Khan said on Twitter.

According to Khan, the power outage occurred after the frequency in the national power distribution system suddenly dropped from 50 to zero.

He has called on people across the country to remain calm, but Karachi residents have expressed their fears and concerns.

People say they are shocked and worried about the blackout

“There is a lot of fear,” Usama Khan said. “Sometimes only one or two cities lose power, but we cannot understand why all of Pakistan has lost power.

“Pakistanis are already scared and now we don’t have electricity. We are shocked.”

Another resident, Shakil Ahmed, said: “I left my house, thinking that only our house had no electricity, but then I saw darkness everywhere. I was surprised.

“Businesses are closed, other activities are closed.”

The blackout is one of the worst Pakistan has experienced.

In 2015, about 80% of the country was left without power after a key transmission line broke.
