Outrage when hundreds of people gather on the popular Dublin beach on the same night the closure is announced

Large crowds gathered on a North Dublin beach on Wednesday night in blatant disregard for Covid-19 rules.

On the same night that Taoiseach Micheal Martin announced the return to total lockdown, images of hundreds of people playing music and lighting fireworks appeared in Portmarnock.

It is understood that the meeting was arranged for the full moon on New Years Eve, but was later pushed forward as more restrictions emerged.

Locals reported that the Garda helicopter was flying over the coastal town last night when Gardai responded to the scene, in violation of Covid-19 regulations.

Several Portmarnock locals contacted Dublin Live to share their disappointment with the organization of the event and its implementation.

13 more Covid-19-related deaths were announced Wednesday, along with 1,718 cases, the highest so far.

A Garda spokeswoman said: “The Gardaí is currently responding to reports of a disturbance on Portmarnock beach. The Gardaí is on the way to the alleged incident.”
